Chizik wasting no time on recruiting trail




New head coach Gene Chizik Gene Chizik (born December 28, 1961 in Clearwater, Florida) is the current head football coach at Iowa State University. Chizik played linebacker for the University of Florida during the 1981 season, competing in the Peach Bowl. He graduated from Florida in 1985.  said he’d be hitting the road and the phones after Monday’s press conference to shore up and add to Auburn’s recruiting class.

The newest Auburn Tiger is Nick Fairley, a 6-foot-4 defensive lineman from Copiah-Lincoln Community College Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Co-Lin) is a junior college with campuses in Wesson and Natchez, Mississippi. It also has an academic center in Mendenhall, Mississippi, which is called the Simpson County Center. It serves a seven-county area in southwest Mississippi.  in Wesson, Miss. He originally signed with Auburn out of Mobile’s Williamson High School in 2007, but did not meet academic qualifications.

Four-star linebacker Eltoro Freeman, formerly of Benjamin Russel High School, is expected to sign with the Tigers today, according to according to

Multiple schools made a run at Fairley, according to AuburnSports.com, but a call from Chizik on Monday night sealed it. Fairley had been verbally committed to the Tigers.

Fairley will be considered a sophomore and will be eligible for spring practice.

Shortly after his press conference Monday, Chizik visited Prattville High School Prattville High School, formerly Autauga County High School, is a high school in Prattville, Alabama and forms part of the Autauga County School System. As of 2005 it has an enrollment of some 2,100 students and a faculty of 103 teachers.  and made an in-home visit to four-star commitment Reggie Taylor, a defensive back from Fort Valley, Ga., according to

Anointed is a Contemporary Christian music duo consisting of siblings Steve and Da'dra Crawford. Their musical style includes elements of R&B, funk, and piano ballads.
 recruiters Phillip Lolley and Joe Whitt and also visited Hoover High.

Jimmy Perry, Auburn’s director of football operations, is also helping Chizik recruit until a full-time staff is in place.

Four-star commitment Phillip Lutzenkirchen, a tight end from Marietta, Ga., is expected to host Chizik on Saturday, according to Inside the Auburn Tigers.

Georgia on Chizik’s mind?

Chizik has not contacted Georgia assistants ...yet.

Chizik has yet to contact Georgia coach Mark Richt to seek permission to speak with his assistant coaches, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.

Chizik has been rumored to be interested in Bulldogs recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner and offensive line coach Stacy Searels, both of which are former Auburn players. Garner interviewed last week to become Auburn’s head coach.

Powers files papers

Junior cornerback Jerraud Powers has filed his papers to have his stock evaluated for the upcoming 2009 NFL Draft. He expects to receive word back in the next few weeks.

“I think every junior should do it just to get some feedback from it,” Powers said.

Powers does not project as a top pick on most scouting service Web sites. He would likely be a second-day selection.

Trott talks about injury

When Tommy Trott stood to speak with reporters Sunday, he was doing so with the assistance of crutches.

The normal recovery period from the surgery is six months, Trott said, so he will likely miss all of spring practice.

Trott sustained the injury against Georgia on Nov. 15. It was a series of three separate blows that ultimately led to , Trott said.

“I went out to block a cornerback on a stretch play and he cut me down trying to make a pile in the backfield. I took a helmet there,” Trott said. “I got off the field, Dr. (James) Andrews looked at it and said I might have sprained my MCL MCL - Macintosh Common LISP  … but that I ought to be able to play.

“I went back out there someone bumped it and it gave a little bit more. After that, I was just blocking somebody and it blew out.

“When it blew out, that was bad.”
