Chiroscience's First MMP Inhibitor for Cancer Enters Phase I Clinical Studies.LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 1998--Chiroscience Group plc today announce its matrix metalloproteinase (MMP MMP Matrix Metalloproteinase (enzymes related to tissue healing/remodeling and cancer cell metastasis) MMP Mixed Member Proportional (New Zealand electoral system) MMP Multi-man Publishing ) inhibitor for cancer, D2163, has entered Phase I clinical studies. The initial study is a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in healthy volunteers to assess the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of D2163, following administration of ascending single oral doses. D2163 has been selected for clinical evaluation clinical evaluation Medtalk An evaluation of whether a Pt has symptoms of a disease, is responding to treatment, or is having adverse reactions to therapy in cancer based upon its profile as an inhibitor of enzymes believed to be important in the key processes that occur in the growth and spread of cancer tumours as well as its performance in preclinical safety studies. D2163 has displayed encouraging activity in preclinical models of cancer without exhibiting unwanted activity associated with joint pain and tendonitis tendonitis /ten·do·ni·tis/ (ten?do-ni´tis) tendinitis. ten·do·ni·tis n. Variant of tendinitis. . It is structurally different from, and more selective than, first generation MMP inhibitors and is not expected to exhibit the side effects Side effects Effects of a proposed project on other parts of the firm. which have been experienced by other inhibitors in this class. D1927, the other MMP inhibitor being developed for oncology which has been developed in parallel with D2163, has completed its preclinical evaluation and is anticipated to begin Phase I clinical studies in the first quarter of this year. Dr. John Padfield, chief executive of Chiroscience, commented: "The potential utility of MMP inhibitors in cancer has been demonstrated and we are delighted that Chiroscience's second generation selective inhibitor D2163 has progressed as planned to the clinical phase of its testing." D2163 is likely to have utility against a wide range of solid tumour types. Following the initial Phase I tolerability studies, Phase II patient trials are planned to commence in late 1998. Chiroscience Group plc Chiroscience is an emerging pharmaceutical company operating in the UK and USA, which uses its diverse technology platform to discover and develop novel medicines for improved healthcare. The Group has two principal activities, operating as Darwin Discovery and ChiroTech. Chiroscience is listed on the London Stock Exchange London Stock Exchange London marketplace for securities. It was formed in 1773 by a group of stockbrokers who had been doing business informally in local coffeehouses. . Darwin Discovery embraces activities in Cambridge, Seattle and Stevenage, including gene-based research and molecular biology molecular biology, scientific study of the molecular basis of life processes, including cellular respiration, excretion, and reproduction. The term molecular biology was coined in 1938 by Warren Weaver, then director of the natural sciences program at the Rockefeller , through chiral-based, combinatorial, medicinal and process chemistries, to clinical development. It is engaged in the discovery and development of innovative small molecule drugs and related diagnostics with a therapeutic focus on autoimmune disease autoimmune disease, any of a number of abnormal conditions caused when the body produces antibodies to its own substances. In rheumatoid arthritis, a group of antibody molecules called collectively RF, or rheumatoid factor, is complexed to the individual's own gamma , cancer, inflammation, pain and osteoporosis.
