Howard Pien, president and chief executive officer of Chiron Corp., was elected to the board of directors of California Healthcare Institute (CHI). CHI is a non-profit public policy research organization representing leading California academic institutions, biotechnology, medical device, and pharmaceutical firms.

Pien, 46, was appointed president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Chiron in April 2003. He is also a member of the company's board of directors. Pien joined Chiron from GlaxoSmithKline, where he assumed the role of president, Pharmaceuticals International, in January of 2001. Previously, Pien held the position of president, pharmaceuticals, SmithKline Beecham, where he had responsibility for the commercial operations of the company's worldwide pharmaceuticals business. Before assuming that role in May 1998, he held key positions in SmithKline Beecham's pharmaceuticals business in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The corporate headquarters are in Abbott Park, Illinois, a neighborhood of North Chicago, Illinois.  and five years for Merck, with assignments in sales, market research, licensing and product management. Pien holds a bachelor's degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at Cambridge; coeducational; chartered 1861, opened 1865 in Boston, moved 1916. It has long been recognized as an outstanding technological institute and its Sloan School of Management has notable programs in business,  and an M.B.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University.
