Chips and Technologies supplies graphics accelerator for ultralight Apple Macintosh PowerBook; PCI-based 64-bit flat panel accelerator provides fast graphics performance and full-Screen, full-Motion video in Macintosh PowerBook 2400c.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1997--Chips and Technologies, Inc., the leading supplier of video graphics controllers and accelerators for flat panel displays, today announced that Apple Computer's ultralight Macintosh PowerBook(R) 2400c/180 features a high-performance graphics subsystem built around a 64-bit HiQVideo(TM) flat panel video graphics accelerator from Chips and Technologies Chips and Technologies (C&T) was the first fabless semiconductor company, a model developed by its founder Gordon Campbell.

Its first product was an EGA IBM compatible graphics chip. This was followed by chipsets for PC motherboards and other computer graphics chips.

and a PCI-based system architecture. Originally created with the Japanese market in mind, the high-end PowerBook 2400c was designed by Apple with collaboration from IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Japan.

The new Apple PowerBook comes standard with a brilliant 10.4-inch active-matrix color SVGA (Super VGA) A screen resolution of 800x600 pixels. Third-party vendors extended IBM's VGA display standard and were the first to use the term. SVGA has also referred to 1,024x768 resolutions. See PC display modes.  display. With Chips and Technologies' flat panel graphics accelerator inside the PowerBook 2400c, Apple offers consumers desktop-level graphics performance, including scrolling and graphics acceleration and Zoomed Video (ZV) port support. The PCI-based custo accelerators support 16-bit color video output (thousands of colors) at up to 800 x 600 pixels.

"Chips and Technologies has worked closely with Apple Computer for the last five years to provide Apple's customers with high- performance flat panel display capabilities in PowerBook systems," said Tim Erjavec, Director of Marketing at Chips and Technologies. "As a result of this long-standing relationship, Apple has been able to leverage the compatibility of our integrated software and silicon solutions as they move rapidly from one PowerBook generation to the next."

Full-Motion Video Driven by Chips and Technologies' HiQVideo Accelerator

The Macintosh PowerBook 2400c offers a powerful graphics display subsystem based on Chips and Technologies' HiQV32 (65550) video graphics accelerator. This 64-bit PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

device combines video acceleration with a high-performance graphics engine to deliver full- screen video at 30 frames/sec (fps). Separate video and graphics pipelines further reduce system processor overhead and minimize memory requirements for video and graphics color depth.

The HiQV32 accelerator delivers all the fundamental capabilities needed to run multimedia applications. The video capture system accepts video data from either the systems' bus or the video capture port that supports the Zoomed Video port See ZV Port.  technology option. This allows users to simultaneously display video streams from multiple sources and to open multiple video windows. These features are critical for advanced multimedia applications such as current MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs). 1 and future MPEG2 video playback, video teleconferencing, and on-screen television through industry standard PC Cards.

Macintosh PowerBook 2400c

The ultralight Macintosh PowerBook 2400c notebook computer measures just 10.5-by-8.4-by-1.9 inches and weighs in at just 4.4 pounds. It is available in a single, high-performance standard configuration with 16MB of EDO RAM, expandable to 48MB, 1.3GB IDE hard drive, two CardBus hardware ready PC Card slots for a wide range of 16- or 32-bit PC Card options, one built-in speaker; and ports for 16-bit video out, ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) A low-speed serial bus for connecting keyboards, mice and other input devices on Apple IIgs and Macintosh computers.
