Chips and Technologies develops customized graphics controllers for next generation of Apple Macintosh PowerBooks.

, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 1995--Chips and Technologies today announced that Apple Computer's newest PowerBook lines, which include the 5000, 2000 and 100 series models, feature Chips and Technologies' customized flat panel graphics controllers.

Apple's newly announced PowerBook 5300 and 2300 series are its first notebook computers based on the advanced PowerPC 603e processor, while the new 190 models bring 68LC040 performance to Apple's most affordable line of notebooks. All of the new PowerBooks use advanced graphics controllers which were developed exclusively for Apple by Chips and Technologies Chips and Technologies (C&T) was the first fabless semiconductor company, a model developed by its founder Gordon Campbell.

Its first product was an EGA IBM compatible graphics chip. This was followed by chipsets for PC motherboards and other computer graphics chips.

With CHIPS' flat panel graphics controllers in its PowerBooks, Apple is offering consumers desktop-level graphics performance and a wide range of display options, ranging from passive-matrix monochrome to active-matrix SVGA (Super VGA) A screen resolution of 800x600 pixels. Third-party vendors extended IBM's VGA display standard and were the first to use the term. SVGA has also referred to 1,024x768 resolutions. See PC display modes.  color screens. In the new PowerBooks, the VRAM-based custom controllers support 16-bit per pixel color, 600 x 800 resolution and help save space and weight with a 144-pin TQFD configuration.
