Chips and Technologies' graphic accelerator is incorporated into Hewlett-Packard's OmniBook 600 PC; Highly integrated chip delivers uncompromised graphics performance to world's lightest, color notebook PC.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 1994--Chips and Technologies Inc. announced Friday the use of its 65545 flat panel/CRT graphics accelerator in the industry's lightest, full performance notebook computer, the HP OmniBook 600 PC.

The 65545 is the latest addition to Chips and Technologies' industry-leading family of flat-panel graphics controllers. The highly integrated device is expressly designed to bring desktop-level graphics and multimedia capabilities to compact portable systems.

"With the OmniBook 600 PC, our goal was to build the industry's lightest color notebook," said Andy Zaremba, OmniBook product marketing manager at HP. "Chips and Technologies Chips and Technologies (C&T) was the first fabless semiconductor company, a model developed by its founder Gordon Campbell.

Its first product was an EGA IBM compatible graphics chip. This was followed by chipsets for PC motherboards and other computer graphics chips.
met our needs in providing a highly integrated graphics subsystem that delivers superior graphics performance and color display capabilities."

Weighing only 3.8 pounds, the new HP OmniBook 600 PC combines high-performance and a high quality color display into an exceptionally convenient and durable package. Integrating local bus video and advanced graphics capabilities, the small system outperforms many of the mainstream notebooks presently available. The system is designed to give the mobile professional immediate access to critical information. An "Instant-on" feature allows users to return immediately to where they they were when they turned the machine off. The OmniBook 600 PC also features an HP Personal Information Manager (PIM (1) (Protocol Independent Multicast) A multicast routing protocol endorsed by the IETF. Used in conjunction with an existing unicast routing protocol, it comes in two flavors: Dense Mode (PIM-DM) is used when recipients in the target group are in a concentrated ), financial calculator and "hot" function keys for immediate access to applications.

"When we developed the 65545 our aim was to help companies like Hewlett-Packard bring desktop graphics performance to the lightest, most portable package," said Keith Angelo from Chips and Technologies. "The HP OmniBook 600 PC, with help from CHIPS' 65545, does just that. We've had a long, successful relationship with Hewlett-Packard in the portable systems market and we look forward to continuing a partnership that focuses on developing new, productivity-enhancing graphics solutions for mobile computing."

About the 65545

Introduced to the design community in May, 1994, Chips & Technologies' 65545 is the first graphics controller to offer both an accelerated graphics engine and a video port for overlay. The chip's integrated 32-bit BitBLT engine, optimized for the Windows BitBLT format, delivers an industry-leading 22 million WinMarks on a Pentium-based system running a 640x480 display with 256 colors.

A unique video port on the 65545 offers video overlay from TV tuners, camcorders, VCRs, laser disks and other video sources. This capability allows the capture and playback of video images used in a variety of multimedia applications. The device accommodates both VL or PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

That unique feature set has proved very attractive. Over the last several months the high-performance 65545 has been designed into many of the latest notebook computers including the highly acclaimed NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

and Toshiba's Pentium-based T4900CT. The chip's predecessors can be found in Hewlett-Packard, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , Gateway and Apple Computer portables.

The 65545 supports a wide range of display technologies including monochrome and color single scan and dual scan STN (SuperTwisted Nematic) A passive matrix LCD technology that provides better contrast than twisted nematic (TN) by twisting the molecules from 180 to 270 degrees. Proprietary high performance display drivers for Windows, Windows NT and OS/2 increase graphics performance by 50 percent over systems using standard VGA drivers.
