Chips and Technologies' Controllers Bring Desktop Graphics Performance to Array of New Toshiba Notebooks; CHIPS' 65540/65545 product line support Toshiba's value priced notebook computers.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 1995--Chips and Technologies announced today that the new Toshiba Satellite Pro T2150CD and the Satellite T2100 notebook computers incorporate two members of CHIPS' top-of-the-line 65540/65545 VGA (Video Graphics Array) The display standard for the PC. All PC display adapters support VGA, and Windows machines boot up in "VGA mode" before switching to higher resolutions.  flat panel/CRT graphic controller product family.

Just introduced, the T2150CD integrates a 5.25-inch double speed CD-ROM See 2x CD-ROM.  drive for professionals who need sophisticated multimedia presentations, video capture and high-speed data retrieval - all while on the road.

"We chose the CHIPS 65545, because we didn't have to make any compromises," said Steve Lair, vice president of marketing for the Computer Systems Division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. "It not only provided superior performance, display quality and 3.3 volt operation, but we found no other device that could match its ability to support stunning multimedia presentations in a portable environment."

The 65545 is the world's first flat panel graphics display controller to offer both an accelerated graphics (BitBLT) engine and a video port for overlay. It brings to users the ability to display the wealth of images now available on CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

The recently announced Satellite T2100 packages an advanced feature set in a sleek new design for retail and price-sensitive corporate buyers. The family offers three display options, including a 9.5-inch monochrome screen, an extra-large 10.4-inch dual-scan color display and an 8.4-inch active-matrix color screen. The T2100 utilizes the Chips and Technologies Chips and Technologies (C&T) was the first fabless semiconductor company, a model developed by its founder Gordon Campbell.

Its first product was an EGA IBM compatible graphics chip. This was followed by chipsets for PC motherboards and other computer graphics chips.

"When we defined our product line, we wanted to offer the best viewing quality and enable the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  to quickly develop complete product families," said Steve Preston, product marketing manager at Chips and Technologies. "The 65540/65545's compatibility provides OEMs with the ability to develop an array of products for different market segments in the shortest possible time."

By offering accelerated and non-accelerated devices, the 65540/65545 family allows OEMs to quickly tailor graphic subsystems to address specific price/performance points from a single motherboard design.

The 65540/65545 family supports a variety of panel technologies including color and monochrome STN (SuperTwisted Nematic) A passive matrix LCD technology that provides better contrast than twisted nematic (TN) by twisting the molecules from 180 to 270 degrees. See DSTN.  and TFT (Thin Film Transistor) The term typically refers to active matrix screens on laptop computers. Active matrix LCD provides a sharper screen display and broader viewing angle than does passive matrix. See LCD and thin film.

Both controllers come equipped with VGA-compatible BIOS. Additional VGA BIOS are available from third party manufacturers. Also available are high performance drivers for the latest versions of Windows, Windows NT and OS/2.
