The LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  Access Server and the Edge Router Also called an "access router," it is a router that sits at the periphery of a network. Contrast with "core router," which is a router that resides in the middle of the network. See router and WAN router. See also edge device.  Modules are also the first products to emerge utilizing Chipcom's OpenHub technology. OpenHub technology provides built-in investment protection by allowing modules to work in any Chipcom hub - from the high-end ONcore Switching Systems Switching systems (communications)

, to the mid-range ONline System Concentrator, to the ONsemble Stackable Hub A type of Ethernet hub that can be expanded by daisy chaining additional hubs together via dedicated ports for that purpose. They are designed to stack vertically and be treated as a single domain by the network management software. .

"The enterprise switching hub is the natural convergence point for integrating networking technologies and applications," said Dan Poranski, senior product manager at Chipcom. "These products address the need to tie previously disconnected users and sites into the corporate enterprise, with all the management and security benefits our enterprise customers demand."

LAN Access Server Module

Chipcom's new LAN Access Module gives remote and mobile users complete access to resources on their corporate enterprise networks. The 8- or 16-port module treats remote users as if they were locally connected to a corporate Ethernet or Token Ring A local area network (LAN) access method developed by IBM. Conforming to the IEEE 802.5 standard, Token Ring uses a token ring access method and connects up to 255 nodes in a star topology at 4, 16 or 100 Mbps.  local area network (LAN), enabling them to user all the applications and data on which they depend.

Designed for business travelers, telecommuters, small offices and other remote sites, the LAN Access Server Module provides corporate network connections to any valid users, anywhere in the world, over public telephone lines.

As the first remote access product designed to reside in a hub, the LAN Access Server Module takes advantage of all the functionality, management and security savings benefits inherent in Chipcom's intelligent switching hub products. To simplify management, the module can be easily controlled through Chipcom's ONdemand suite of graphical management applications, or any SNMP-based local or remote management console A terminal or workstation used to monitor and control a network. See Microsoft Management Console. . The network manager sees all remote users in the context of the entire network, with the ability to monitor and control all nodes from a central management station.

Because protection for unwanted intrusion is a key concern in remote LAN access, the LAN Access Server Module also includes multiple levels of standards-based security features, including password protection, automatic callback, resource access control, and integration with third-party security devices.

The LAN Access Server Module is also designed to support today's complex, heterogeneous networks. It simultaneously supports remote users of all the popular platforms and operating systems, such as DOS and Windows PCs, Macintosh and UNIX UNIX

The network client was called IBM LAN Requester and was included with OS/2 EE 1.1 by default. , Banyan VINES and DECnet.

The LAN Access Server Module is powered by a unique RISC-based, scalable architecture that reduces network traffic and supports all popular WAN communication methods (Async, Sync, ISDN ISDN

Edge Router Module

The Edge Router is a low-cost, high-performance module designed to operate at the "edge" of a corporate network, whether at a remote office or the far reaches of a central facility. The module connects two or more LANs, with up to three redundant links to ensure fail-safe network availability.

With one Ethernet or Token Ring LAN and up to three WAN connections, the Edge Router Module supports both synchronous and asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  routing over serial links. In asynchronous mode, the Edge Router Module is an extremely cost-effective way to provide WAN connectivity, taking advantage of modern dial-up lines. When configured for synchronous lines, the Edge Router Module can run at T1/E1 speeds over leased lines. This flexibility allows companies to start with low-cost dial-up connectivity and migrate to high-speed leased lines as their requirements grow.

The new Edge Router Module resulted from a joint development between Chipcom and Cisco Systems, integrating Cisco's full set of multiprotocol routing capabilities with Chipcom's unique port-switching architecture. It runs Cisco's standard software and is fully integrated with all Cisco's router devices. At the same time, it takes full advantage of Chipcom's switching technology, allowing managers to change network layouts on the fly by switching the router to any of the hub's internal networks. Using Chipcom's ONdemand network management software, managers can simply move the router to the desired network via a point-and-click graphical interface.
