(ATM) offerings with the announcement today of new products for its ONcore Switching System and ONsemble family that help customers migrate from traditional local area networks (LANs) to high-speed virtual and switched campus environments.

The three new products unveiled today -- including the ONcore ATM 155Mbps UNI Module, an ATM-ready ONcore 10-Slot Switching System and the ONsemble LAN-to-ATM Bridge -- address customers' ATM needs today, and allow them to seamlessly integrate their legacy network infrastructures.

Chipcom's ATM offerings are based on technology developed jointly between the company and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  as part of the long-standing, strategic marketing and development alliance between the two organizations.

Frank Hiatt, director, ATM products at Chipcom Corp., "The ATM products introduced today complement the suite of ATM-based, end-to-end solutions we announced earlier this year. These new products will deliver a broad range of affordable approaches and technologies for ATM backbone and legacy LAN-to-ATM connectivity."

Chipcom's new ATM products for the ONcor and ONsemble platforms include:

o ONcore 155 Mbps UNI Module -- A two-port User-to-Network (UNI) module that creates 155 megabits-per-second (Mbps) connections over a variety of media networks up to two kilometers away. This module is designed for high-speed backbone connectivity across campus and enterprise networks. Chipcom's ONcore 155Mbps UNI Module occupies one slot, but supports two user-installable I/O cards. It allows customers to mix-and-match different combinations of media in a single module, initially Multimode Fiber An optical fiber with a larger core than singlemode fiber. It is the most commonly used fiber for short distances such as LANs. Light can enter the core at different angles, making it easier to connect the light source to broader light sources such as LEDs. , with Single Mode Fiber and others to follow in 1996. This module can be used for desktop-to-switch connectivity and switch-to-switch connectivity for backbone solutions.

o ATM-Ready 10-slot ONcore Switching System -- A high-speed switching backplane for the 10-Slot ONcore System that supports ATM modules as well as future packet-switching modules. The ATM portion of this backplane is a true switch-base backplane -- not a bus-based system like many competitive ATM implementations. An optional field-installable backplane is also available to current 10-Slot ONcore System users to easily and quickly add ATM capabilities to an existing 10-Slot ONcore platform.

o ONsemble LAN-to-ATM Bridge -- A network bridge for migrating legacy Ethernet and Token Ring A local area network (LAN) access method developed by IBM. Conforming to the IEEE 802.5 standard, Token Ring uses a token ring access method and connects up to 255 nodes in a star topology at 4, 16 or 100 Mbps.  LANs to an ATM network center, the two-port ONsemble LAN-to-ATM Bridge can be expanded to four ports and has an optional 100 Mbps bridge card to provide an ATM uplink. The Bridge provides LAN emulation See LANE.  software that allows users to directly access an ATM environment while they continue to use existing LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  products, thereby protecting their investment in that equipment.
