A group of golfers from Burgham Park have raised more than pounds 1,300 for Macmillan Cancer Relief's Northumberland Appeal thanks to a golfing marathon over seven courses. Lady captain Margaret Lloyd, her vice captain Viv Cowell, men's captain Brian Mearns with assistant pro David O'Brien and the club operations director Terry Minett began their 72 hole golfing extravaganza at four in the morning. They played nine holes at Burgham, Longhirst Hall, Warkworth, Alnmouth Village, Alnmouth, Alnwick, Linden Hall and ended up back at Burgham. They completed their final round at 9.30pm.

IN the Durham County Clark Cup semi-finals at Chester-le-Street, Wearside beat Hartlepool 3-2 and Ramside Hall beat Consett by the same score. The final will be played at Seaton Carew on Sunday, September 11.

THE Durham Second Division Championship at Dinsdale Spa was shared by Charlie Mitchell (Brancepeth Castle), George Rennie (Durham City) and David Hunter (Wearside) ( all on 74.

BLACKWELL Grange's Ellie Givens won both the Kilburn Trophy (U-16) and the Clement Bowl (U-18) in the Northern Girls Championship at Darlington with two 74. The following day Ellie led the Durham girls to a 4-3 win over Yorkshire at Stressholme.

SOUTH SHIELDS club champion Martin Ellis, shot 65 in a medal to set a course record.

ANDREW Oliphant has become a senior instructor at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Florida. Oliphant has worked for Leadbetter for eight years, running his only British academy at The Wynyard Club in Tees Valley, before helping to set up an academy in Singapore. The former Carlisle player began his career as assistant professional at Carlisle and Eden.
