Chinese carriers to launch regular flights to Oita, Kagoshima.


OITA, Japan, Feb. 28 Kyodo

Chinese airlines plan to launch regular flights between Shanghai Shanghai (shăng`hī`, shäng`hī`), city (1994 est. pop. 12,980,000), in, but independent of, Jiangsu prov., E China, on the Huangpu (Whangpoo) River where it flows into the Chang (Yangtze) estuary.  and Oita in April, and Shanghai and Kagoshima in May, upgrading Chinese carriers' current flights to the two cities on a chartered basis, the Oita and Kagoshima prefectural pre·fec·ture

The Oita prefectural government said China Northwest Airlines plans to launch two regular round-trip flights per week between Shanghai and Oita, southwestern Japan, in late April.

The carrier currently handles two chartered flights on the same route a week, with passenger levels logging 95% in February, it said.

''The move reflects the level of exchanges between Oita and Shanghai. We would like to develop sports and cultural exchanges including those linked to the 2002 World Cup finals,'' Oita Gov. Morihiko Hiramatsu Morihiko Hiramatsu (平松 守彦 Hiramatsu Morihiko  told reporters.

China Eastern Airlines eyes launching two weekly round-trip flights between Shanghai and Kagoshima, southwestern Japan, as early as May, the Kagoshima prefectural government said.

The carrier currently handles chartered flight on the same route.
