Frost & Sullivan's (www.frost.com) strategic new research, "Chinese Portable Computer Market," revenues for the Chinese market are expected to experience continuous growth resulting from rapid technological advancements, growing size of mobile workforce, continuous and steady growth of the economy, increased Internet usage and strong demand from small and medium-size enterprises. The market experienced 45.7 percent growth in 1998, and is expected to post a compound annual growth rate (CAGR CAGR

Frost & Sullivan predicts the Chinese market will follow global consolidation trends; consequently, the difference in prices between imported and locally made computers will narrow. Local companies will be forced to place greater emphasis on offering the latest technology and strengthening their brand names if they wish to thrive.

Frost & Sullivan estimates 600,000 portable computers exist in China. A majority of these computers were purchased in the period 1996 to 1998, which indicates the rapid growth of the market, according to Chen. Advancing technology is expected to prompt replacements as well as first-time purchases.

The market for portable computers in China had 34 active participants in 1998 and witnessed many mergers and acquisitions. "With new players entering the market in 1999, some of the existing smaller players may find the going tough and exit," Chen says.
