I'M glad Alex Salmond Alexander Elliot Anderson Salmond, known as Alex Salmond (born December 31, 1954, Linlithgow), is a Scottish politician, and the current First Minister of Scotland, heading a minority government.  consulted with Amnesty International Amnesty International (AI,) human-rights organization founded in 1961 by Englishman Peter Benenson; it campaigns internationally against the detention of prisoners of conscience, for the fair trial of political prisoners, to abolish the death penalty and torture of  before heading off to China. He is, after all, visiting a country where being the leader of separatist movement is a crime punishable by the death penalty.

Mr Salmond is right that there is much to gain by engaging with China, but, by speaking out about the Chinese government's human rights record, he can ensure that some of the gains can be passed on to ordinary Chinese people.
