China artist vows to sue over police beating.

BEIJING: A leading Chinese artist vowed Thursday to sue police in southwest China Southwest China (Chinese: 西南; pinyin: Xinan) is a region of China defined by governmental bureaus that includes the municipality of Chongqing; provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou; and the Tibet Autonomous Region.  for detaining, beating and blocking him from testifying at a trial of a fellow activist charged with subversion.

Ai is a prominent artist, architect and photographer who have become increasingly active on political issues. Born in 1957, he is the son of late Chinese poet Ai Qing Ai Qing: see Ai Ch'ing. , who was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), but today is revered as a leading poet.
