China and Russia as allies.

At the end of "Peace Mission 2005," an unprecedented week-long Chinese-Russian joint military training exercise, Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan "called for new areas of cooperation between the Chinese and Russian military during talks ... with his Russian counterpart Sergei Ivanov," reported Beijing's Xinhua News Service on September 6. "The cooperation between the armed forces of China and Russia has reached new highs as bilateral relations continue to grow," exulted Cao following a Moscow meeting with Ivanov.

According to Cao, the first joint exercise between Moscow and Beijing "showed the political, military and security mutual trust between the two countries has grown to new levels and has laid a firm foundation for cooperation in national defense and security," continued the Chinese news report.

The supposed "Peace Mission" concluded with a successful mock invasion, noted an account from the Taiwan News (which is published on the island most likely to be targeted by such an invasion). "Chinese and Russian paratroopers simulated the seizure of an airfield as planes dropped combat vehicles by parachute on the Shandong Peninsula in the Yellow Sea," noted the paper. "Propaganda leaflets fell from the sky in 'a psychological tactic to shake the enemy's will.'" According to Xinhua, "The exercise ended with the defeat of the 'enemy.'"
