The Guangdong Unicom contract marks the first implementation within the national China Unicom family of provincial carriers of a new networking architecture that will combine the power of optical and the utility of Ethernet via an integrated business, service provider and optical network based on one common language -- Ethernet technology. By eliminating the need for translations between Ethernet and other transport protocols -- such as T1, DS3 and ATM -- Optical Ethernet effectively extends an organization's Ethernet LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  (Local Area Network) beyond its four walls, enabling a radical shift in the way computing and network resources are deployed. Guandong Unicom will also trial the Nortel Networks Passport 8600 10-Gigabit Ethernet product, also announced today.

"Our Optical Ethernet solution resolves the major bandwidth bottleneck for businesses and data centers -- the `on-ramp' for LAN access to the service provider network," said Robert Mao, president and chief executive officer, Nortel Networks China. "Guangdong Unicom will now be positioned to empower its data customers by allowing them to blast through this bandwidth bottleneck to rapidly and cost-effectively deploy mission-critical eBusiness applications and capitalize on Cap´i`tal`ize on`

An Internet economy differs from a traditional economy in a number of ways, including: communication, market segmentation, distribution costs, and price. ."

"With Nortel Networks solutions, Guangdong Unicom can now offer multiple, revenue-generating wholesale and value-added outsourcing services, including gigabit-speed Ethernet-based VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) with the reliability and economics of optical networks," said Yang Chun Yang Chun (杨春) is a character in the Water Margin.

Yang Chun was from Jieliang Prefecture in Puzhou. He had long and skinny arms and lean frame, but he possessed great strength and used a long sabre in combat, thus earning him the nickname
Liang, general manager, Guangdong Unicom. "In addition, we can tailor services to help individual customers respond promptly to modifications in bandwidth and site requirements dictated by changing competitive environments."

The Guangdong Unicom Optical Ethernet contract furthers Nortel Networks first-mover advantage in bringing the high-performance Optical and Metro Internet to China. By bridging enterprise LANs and service provider backbones, the Optical Ethernet solution builds on China Unicom's recent selection of Nortel Networks to deploy an IP (Internet Protocol) metro access network in Guangdong province.

Nortel Networks Optical Ethernet solutions include the Passport 8600 routing switch, as well as the OPTera PacketEdge system, the OPTera Metro portfolio, the Business Policy Switch and Preside management for Optical Ethernet.

Nortel Networks first introduced its Optical Ethernet solution in March 2000 in announcements with Canada's Bell Nexxia and Scandinavia's Utfors. Today, Nortel Networks Optical Ethernet solutions are in service in 12 metropolitan networks and being trialed in another 45 networks worldwide. In China, regional China Telecom operator Qingdao Telecom is deploying Nortel Networks Optical Ethernet solution to bring high-performance Internet access to over 100 broadband neighborhoods. In Asia Pacific, New Zealand's UnitedNetworks is breaking new ground by harnessing the power of Optical Ethernet to drive a new, open access wholesale fiber optic network in the central business districts of Auckland and Wellington.

According to Frost & Sullivan, a global industry consultancy, Nortel Networks is the leader in China's Optical Internet infrastructure market, with more than 20 contract wins for 10-gigabit and DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

Worldwide, Nortel Networks ranked no. 1 in long haul DWDM, metropolitan DWDM and SONET/SDH market share in 2000, according to the Dell'Oro Group.
