China Telecom Selects Foundry Networks' High-Performance Switching Solutions for Shanghai Internet Data Centers.

Shanghai Telecom Deploys Foundry's BigIron Layer 3 Switches,

FastIron 4802 and FastIron II Layer 2/3 Switches to Enhance Network

Performance and Service Quality

Foundry Networks(R), Inc. (Nasdaq:FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, announced todaythat it has been chosen by Shanghai Telecom, one of the largest and most influential subsidiaries of China Telecom, in Phase 2 of its Internet Data Center (IDC) infrastructure upgrade project. Foundry will provide its best-of-breed web hosting solutions, including its 3rd generation ASIC-based FastIron(R) 4802 Layer 2/3 switch and its industry-leading BigIron(R) Layer 3 switch, throughout its data centers in the Shanghai metropolitan area to significantly enhance its data center reliability, performance and capability. Foundry was awarded Phase 1 of this ambitious infrastructure upgrade project in October 2000 and its switches have met all the demanding requirements after completion of Phase 1 deployment this spring.

Shanghai Telecom has deployed Foundry's industry-leading BigIron Layer 3 switches, FastIron Layer 2/3 access switches and ServerIron Layer 4 - 7 Web switches to provide superior end-to-end system availability and performance in its IDCs. The new FastIron 4802 switches, providing rate limiting capabilities in the access networks, enable Shanghai Telecom to provide on-demand bandwidth provisioning from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps in increments as little as 256 Kbps to turn bandwidth into a profitable revenue stream. Shanghai Telecom had deployed Foundry's ServerIron Layer 4 - 7 Web switches for DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the  and Email server load balancing.

Shanghai Telecom utilizes Foundry's long haul Gigabit Ethernet technology to connect its regional data centers into a high-performance, cost-effective and reliable service backbone network. The complete Foundry solution also includes sophisticated capabilities such as bandwidth control, service accounting and billing, and access control.
