China Deal for Millions of Java Desktops.


A Chinese IT consortium has signed up to Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA[3]) is an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information-technology services, founded on 24 February 1982.  Inc's Java Desktop System A comprehensive client software environment from Sun for its Solaris operating system. Java Desktop System (JDS), based on the Java 2 platform, includes the GNOME user interface, StarOffice application suite, Evolution e-mail and Mozilla browser.  (JDS See Java Desktop System. ) to form the foundation of a national desktop software standard.

), backed by the Chinese government, has selected Sun to be a preferred partner in the project, with the CSSC using JDS to develop and deploy an affordable and secure desktop.

CSSC plans to deliver its own branded desktop products using JDS. The organizationEs goal is to install 200 million copies of the desktop nationwide starting with approximately 500,000 to one million seats per year. The multi-year agreement is planned to start at the end of next month.
