China's SMIC Foundry Selects Ion for Electrostatics Management in Fab 1.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

BERKELEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 27, 2002

Ion Systems, Inc., the world's largest provider of electrostatics electrostatics, study of phenomena associated with charged bodies at rest (see charge; electricity). A charged body has an excess of positive or negative charges, a condition usually brought about by the transfer of electrons to or from the body.  management products and services, today announced that Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, (“SMIC”, NYSE: SMI, SEHK: 981) is a semiconductor foundry in mainland China, providing integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing services at 350 nm to 90nm technologies.  (SMIC SMIC Salaire Minimum Interprofessionnel de Croissance (French: guaranteed minimum wage)

SMIC began official production in its Fab 1 facility on September 25, 2001. This Fab is estimated to reach full capacity, producing 42,500 8-inch wafers monthly by the middle of 2003. To protect SMIC's Fab 1 from ESD, Ion installed Model 5511 ceiling emitters with iCON technology and Model 5285 AeroBar ionizers.

"We chose Ion because we are committed to delivering quality products to our customers worldwide," stated Dr. Richard Chang, SMIC president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "With the technological superiority of Ion's solutions, we can ensure SMIC's customers that our production process is ESD-safe."

Electrostatic problems, such as ESD and electromagnetic interference (EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference) An electrical disturbance in a system due to natural phenomena, low-frequency waves from electromechanical devices or high-frequency waves (RFI) from chips and other electronic devices. Allowable limits are governed by the FCC. ) can cause particle contamination, yield loss, equipment downtime, and low throughput in manufacturing facilities. Static needs to be controlled to allow for advancing technology. Ion's advanced electrostatics management solutions will reduce electrostatic problems and improve yield and throughput for SMIC as it implements production at .25 micron technology and beyond.

"We are very pleased that SMIC selected Ion as its electrostatics management supplier for its first fab," stated Scott Gehlke, CEO of Ion. "With Ion's presence in Shanghai, as well as our new office in Taipei, Taiwan, Ion is positioned to deliver service and support to SMIC, as well as other customers in China."
