Chile's Terra Andina Appoints Artemis for U.S. Sales & Marketing.

Terra Andina winery of Chile has appointed San Francisco-based Artemis Wines International as its U.S. sales and marketing office. Owned by the Claro Group, Terra Andina is one of Chile's leading wineries. With the hiring of Artemis Wines International, Terra Andina is reentering the U.S. wine market after a three-year absence and will be working directly with U.S. distributors through the Artemis team. Terra Andina wines will be available in selected markets around the country beginning in April, 2004.

"We regard the U.S. as a vital wine market for us, and we believe our wines and pricing will have great appeal with American consumers," said Miguel Raczynski, Terra Andina's export director. "The Artemis team has both strong experience with the American wine market and an excellent background with Chile."

Artemis Wines president Eric Smith, born and raised in Chile, heads Artemis Wines International and will oversee all U.S. sales and marketing for Terra Andina wines. Owned by wine import/export executive Carl Jaeger, Artemis Wines International has a team of seasoned wine industry professionals with extensive experience developing import brands in the U.S. market. Chris Harrod, former vice president of marketing for Australian importer Scott Street Portfolio, is now the national brand manager for Terra Andina at Artemis.

"This is one of Chile's top wine companies, and they were looking for innovative ways to build their business in the U.S. Our arrangement gives Terra Andina control over its brand and growth through a team that is already established in the market."

Terra Andina has undergone a significant transformation in recent years. In 2001, the winery was sold by Pernod Ricard to the Santiago-based Claro Group, which also owns the Carmen, Santa Rita and Dona Paula wineries and is a part owner of Los Vascos. The Claro Group named Stefano Gandolini as winemaker, and he has emerged as a dynamic young star in the Chilean wine industry. He has undertaken a complete overhaul of winemaking operations for Terra Andina, where the wines now show notable forward fruit character tempered by European-style balance. Terra Andina now produces about 200,000 cases annually from vineyards in Chile's top regions, including the Maipo, Rapel and Casablanca valleys.
