Children in hospital after road accident.

A BROTHER and sister aged seven and five are in hospital after being involved in a road accident as they went to buy sweets from the local shop.

Shienne Hughes and her younger brother Jordan were in collision with a red Ford Transit The Ford Transit is a range of panel vans, minibuses and pickup trucks, produced by the Ford Motor Company in Europe.

The Transit has been the best-selling light commercial vehicle in Europe for 40 years, and in some countries the term "Transit" has passed into common usage
 in Edwardsville, Treharris, just before 7.30pm on Tuesday.

Jordan suffered serious injuries, including bruising to his lungs and multiple fractures. He faces surgery but his condition is described as stable.

Shienne suffered extensive bruising and friction burns to her back and arms. Doctors say she was very lucky to escape serious injury.

Their mother Emma Hughes, 31, stepfather Mark Davies, 39, and the children's father, Geraint Hughes, were yesterday at their bedside.

The children live at Caretaker Cottage, Edwardsville, where Mr Davies is the caretaker at the village primary school. Shienne and Jordan are pupils at Ysgol Rhyd Y Grug, Quaker's Yard.

Their grandmother Denise Williams, 55, said: "Shienne and Jordan were going with two older children to the local shop to buy sweets. We are all still in a state of shock but just thankful that they are both alive."

The transit van was travelling from the Merthyr Vale area towards Treharris. The driver was not injured.
