Studies in curriculum theory

LB1575

Appelbaum (curriculum studies and mathematics education, Arcadia U., Pennsylvania) offers a simple suggestion to teachers: don't read children's books you're considering using in class as part of a curriculum, but do Read them for yourself. The author suggests that engaging with children's books as a reader and not as a teacher can be a mine of ideas to help teachers do a better job of creating a curriculum plan that will be meaningful and successful. To illustrate his point, he takes readers along on his readings of sections of children's books and youth culture texts, and illustrates how issues raised in the books can be extracted and amplified to promote inquiry and learning.
