a recent study by Decision Analyst in conjunction with Hypothesis.

Earlier this year, Decision Analyst conducted a nationwide survey for the marketing research firm Hypothesis. Titled "Hot or Not?," the survey divided respondents In the context of marketing research, a representative sample drawn from a larger population of people from whom information is collected and used to develop or confirm marketing strategy.  into two age groups -- 8 to 12, and 13 to 17 -- and asked young people about their favorite brands, celebrities, and other lifestyle issues.

The survey also asked respondents whether they believe the country is on the "right track" or "wrong track." Among younger respondents -- those 8 to 12 years old -- 63 percent said they believe the country is on the right track, and 38 percent said America is on the wrong track.

In the older age group, however, attitudes were reversed. When those 13 to 17 were asked about the state of the nation, 56 percent said the country is on the wrong track, while 44 percent said America is moving in the right direction.

For this study, implemented in May, 670 young people 8 to 17 years old were surveyed. The study was conducted by means of Decision Analyst's American Consumer Opinion(R) Online Panel, one of the world's largest Internet consumer opinion panels. It has more than five million participants around the world. The study's margin of error is plus or minus 4 percent.
