Children's historic look at water use.


PUPILS were given an insight into the struggle of getting water to the developing world when they were challenged to produce models of water pumps used throughout the centuries.

Year 10 pupils from Cardinal Newman Catholic Comprehensive in Rhydfelin, Tonyrefail Comprehensive, and Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun, in Hirwaun, were challenged by Welsh Water Dŵr Cymru / Welsh Water (DCWW) is a company which supplies drinking water and wastewater services to most of Wales and parts of western England.

It is regulated under the Water Industry Act 1991.
 to produce a shaduf, a chain pump Chain´ pump`

1. A pump consisting of an endless chain, running over a drum or wheel by which it is moved, and dipping below the water to be raised.
 and an Archimedes screw.

These models are now available for other groups visiting Welsh Water's environmental education centres.

Full-time seconded teacher for Welsh Water Rhys Bebb said:

"It's good to have something produced by individuals that demonstrates the difficulties encountered around the world in obtaining clean drinking water drinking water

supply of water available to animals for drinking supplied via nipples, in troughs, dams, ponds and larger natural water sources; an insufficient supply leads to dehydration; it can be the source of infection, e.g. leptospirosis, salmonellosis, or of poisoning, e.g.
."
