Chicks end long mate wait.


SIX chicks have ended a 50-year wait to breed African white-backed ducks at a wildflife centre in Britain.

Staff at The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust is a wildfowl and wetland conservation charity in the United Kingdom. Its patron is Queen Elizabeth II.

It was founded in 1946 by the ornithologist and artist Sir Peter Scott, initially as the Severn Wildfowl Trust.

) in Slimbridge, Gloucestershire, became hopeful when a pair of the ducks broke with the breed's usual habit of lethargy and displayed "unusually demonstrative court-ship behaviour, not typical of the species".

As the new arrivals were being cared for today, WWT aviculturalist Mark Roberts said: "We're delighted with this breakthrough after years of trying with this wonderful species especially considering that there are only 28 white-backed ducks in the UK."
