Chicken sandwich ' almost killed me off as Mrs Doyle ' PAULINE McLYNN REVEALS AUDITION UPSET.

Byline: LYNNE KELLEHER

ACTRESS Pauline McLynn revealed yesterday she almost missed out on her iconic role in Fr Ted - because of a bout of food poisoning food poisoning, acute illness following the eating of foods contaminated by bacteria, bacterial toxins, natural poisons, or harmful chemical substances. It was once customary to classify all such illnesses as "ptomaine poisoning," but it was later discovered that .

Pauline, 47, said: "It was a chicken and coleslaw cole·slaw also cole slaw

 sandwich, I remember it well.

"I auditioned for Fr Ted on a Saturday and I knew all through the night before when the chicken sandwich was returning to the world that I was in a bit of trouble.

"I knew they hadn't found a Mrs Doyle yet and I thought I really should go but I felt so wretched that I nearly didn't go.

"I dragged myself out. I looked 100 which I think helped and just for the period of time that I needed to do the audition I rallied.

GREY "The upset stomach worked to my favour because I was grey, I looked older than I was at the time.

"I was about 30 and Mrs Doyle is somewhere between 50 and 700."

She also revealed on the With Bennett radio show that she believes the cast would have come back together again if Dermot Morgan hadn't died tragically at the age of just 45 in 1998.

She said: "I mustn't have been at the meeting where we said the third series would be the final one.

"I know if we were all still around we would have gone back and done something.

"We all had this dream of doing a road movie, maybe where they go out to South America to get Bishop Casey, because he was there at the time.

"They would have said masses all over the world on their way.

"There were always possibilities as long as we were all still hale and hearty. But Dermot bowed out. He went young and beautiful."

Pauline said she still constantly hears the catchphrases from Mrs Doyle going about her daily life.

She added: "It would be a very rare day that I wouldn't walk the streets of Dublin that I wouldn't get it shouted at me, 'Ah you will, you will, go on, go on...' "People wouldn't mention it unless they loved the series and it's bigger now than ever, there's no doubt about that. It's always on somewhere."

However, the actress and author was astonished to find fans looking for her autograph when her father was dying a few years ago.

In fact, she was so bowled over by her experiences in the hospital that she is now writing an opera about it.

Pauline added: "It was the most extraor-dinary thing. I am in the throes of writing an opera about it with Neil Martin, a Belfast composer. It's both hilarious and I hope very touching.

"It's called Death Of An Ordinary Man and it's based around my experiences in Castlebar. My father had a massive debilitating de·bil·i·tat·ing

"He ended up as a result in the intensive care unit of Castlebar Hospital which was a wonderful place and you get one-on-one attention."

VIGIL She said she was stunned at the amount of people who asked for her autograph as she kept a bedside vigil.

She said: "We had been told there was no hope for him. He was as strong as an ox.

"All of the bits that make him special, all the brains bits, all of his electricals had blown but he himself was so strong physically, that it took him 10 days to shuffle off.

"The nurse was making her notes, his vital statistics, and a woman leaned across and said, 'What are you doing here, Mrs Doyle?' "I said, 'Well my father is dying'. She said, 'Well, my sons love you. Can I have your autograph?' "She took the pen off the nurse and took a bit of paper off her.

"It never occurred to her that I might crumble in front of her. I just made a note of it.

"I hope when the opera is done that my father will be somewhere in the heavens just laughing his legs off at it.

"I do intend it to be a very poignant, yet hilarious moment."felt so wretched I nearly didn't go.. I dragged myself out and looked 100 which I think helped PAULINE ON FOOD POISONING ORDEAL
