Images of rail

TF25

The history of the Illinois Central Railroad is told in b&w photographs and illustrations in this volume, which chronicles its operations within the city of Chicago and outlying suburbs from the late 1850s to 1960, including its construction, suburban trains, freight and passenger services, Western Lines, shops and repair facilities, people that made the railroad function, and decline. Most of the photos were taken by the Illinois Central Railroad and collected by Downey, who has written four books and many articles, mostly on the railroad. There is no index.
