The system will provide low cost, in-building communications that are especially effective in hard-to-penetrate indoor areas. A major advantage of the new system is that it can be configured to support current systems (PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. This radio spectrum in the 1. , US and International cellular and wireless standards) and may be easily adjusted to support future growth such as 3G services. The target date for full deployment of the new system is December 2000.

Established in 1848, the Chicago Board of Trade has more than 3,600 members, and trades nearly 50 different futures and options on futures contracts. The CBOT has two trading floors: the agricultural floor, located in the landmark 1930s Art Deco style building at La Salle and Jackson Streets in Chicago, and the 60,000 square feet of financial trading floor, sited in a 1990s-built annex to the original building. Each trading floor houses 12 to 15 trading pits, and at any one time there may be as many as 876 booths plus traders located around these trading pits. The Andrew InCell communications system will enhance and expand the CBOT cellular and PCS in-building coverage.

CBOT Interim President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , Dennis A. Dutterer said, "The Chicago Board of Trade is in the business of serving our members and customers, and providing the most efficient and effective markets for risk management. By beta testing this system with Andrew Corporation, we will be taking yet another step to enhance the value of our financial, commodity and stock indices products for market users worldwide."

The CBOT(R) 1930s building with its unique Art Deco detailing poses a challenge for cellular coverage and, surprisingly, the modern 1990s annex does too. The annex's glass-sheathed steel infrastructure partially blocks cellular signals, creating a restrictive environment for cellular phone communications. The InCell system will give the CBOT immediate improvements in cellular and PCS communications penetration away from the trading floors. Currently, use of cellular phones is not allowed on the trading floors. However, the CBOT(R) -- always known as a progressive exchange -- is improving cellular coverage anticipating a time when the open outcry style of trading may involve communications using cellular phones.

The InCell(TM) system design minimizes typical engineering expenses associated with providing improved in-building wireless coverage. The CBOT's in-building system will comprise one or more Central Distribution Units (CDUs) feeding multiple Remote Antenna Units (RAUs). The new Andrew antennas are low profile in-building units fed by Andrew-manufactured composite fiber cable.

At the CBOT, where speedy and effective communications are vital, the new Andrew system will immediately improve communications options and provide essential flexibility for future growth.
