The award was made both to the design firm Hauser Inc. and to Cell Robotics. Other winners were the "Apple Pro Mouse, 2000" and the "Kid Tough Tape Recorder tape recorder, device for recording information on strips of plastic tape (usually polyester) that are coated with fine particles of a magnetic substance, usually an oxide of iron, cobalt, or chromium. The coating is normally held on the tape with a special binder. " by Fisher Price.

The Museum's historic GOOD DESIGN program was founded in 1950 by Edgar J. Kaufmann Edgar J. Kaufmann (1885-1955), was a prominent businessman and philanthropist who owned the best-known department store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the twentieth century. When Professor Albert Einstein visited Pittsburgh in 1934, Mr.  Jr. along with some of America's most important designers -- the pioneering greats of American modern American Modern was a distinct American design aesthetic formed in the period between 1925 and World War II. American Modern was created by a pioneering group of designers, architects and artists, among them were Norman Bel Geddes, Donald Deskey, Henry Dreyfuss, Paul Frankl,  design. This year the program received hundreds of submissions (from airplanes to paperclips) from 28 countries. The jury selected only 100 products worthy of the GOOD DESIGN award for product distinction. The Lasette will be part of the Museum's Permanent Design Collection.

"In 1999, the Lasette won the Photonics Spectra `Circle of Excellence Award' for one of the 25 most important new laser products and the `R&D 100 Award' from R&D Magazine as one of the year's most significant technological developments," said Steve Aiken, Cell Robotics' vice president for Research and Development. "These awards were primarily awards for the technical and engineering accomplishments for being able to build the world's smallest portable crystal laser at an affordable price."

Aiken continued: "I have recently joined Cell Robotics and have been able to contribute to the robustness of the Lasette. However, I am not sure that the public understands the magnitude of the technical accomplishments that have been made on this product by our engineering staff. The awards in 1999 were for the technical accomplishments and in 2000 the awards are for functionality and design.

"The first of these awards was the `Medical Design Excellence Award' given by the Medical Design and Manufacturing magazine which recognizes the form and function, aesthetics, efficiency, business impact, innovation, ease of use, and cost-benefit ratio Cost-benefit ratio

, which may be even more important to our customers than the previously received technical awards.

"Finally today's announcement of the GOOD DESIGN(R) award by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design is purely an award for excellence in design," Aiken concluded.

"We are delighted with the GOOD DESIGN award. This recognition, along with a number of other events, has helped Cell Robotics to be well positioned at it enters 2001," said Cell Robotics president and chief executive officer, Dr. Ronald K. Lohrding.

"The first of these events is the signing into law of the Accidental Needle Stick Safety Act, which gives health-care workers guaranteed access to safety-engineered devices. The Lasette technology is the ultimate in a safety-engineered device, eliminating the possibility of a needle stick accident when drawing blood.

"The second is the technology enhancements that modify the Personal Lasette for the clinical setting. This will show patients the advantages over the steel lancet and will help encourage them to purchase it for their home use.

"Finally, the first in our modified single-use clinical disposables for the Personal Lasette was delivered last Friday and will be demonstrated throughout this week at `Medica medica (māˑ·dē·k ,' the world's largest international medical trade show held in Germany," concluded Lohrding.

Diabetes, a chronic disease, is the most costly of all diseases in the United States and is the sixth-leading cause of death worldwide. The International Diabetes Institute provides the following numbers of people with diabetes by region: 16.9 million in North America, 23.7 million in Europe, 51.2 million in Asia and 12.6 million in Latin America.

If left untreated, diabetes can result in serious long-term complications, including blindness, amputation amputation (ăm'pyətā`shən), removal of all or part of a limb or other body part.
