Chicago's politics of containment.

Upon reading Mick Dumke's article on mayoral politics in the city of Chicago, I am glad to see that a magazine such as yours does not fear to print stories highlighting the "other" side of the political machine. Mr. Wilen (from the National Center of Poverty Law) is correct in stating that the devil is truly in the details. Programs like the Chicago Housing Authority's "Plan for Transformation" does nothing but renew a politics of containment containment

Strategic U.S. foreign policy of the late 1940s and early 1950s intended to check the expansionist designs of the Soviet Union through economic, military, diplomatic, and political means. It was conceived by George Kennan soon after World War II.

, keeping prime real estate areas safe for potential white and affluent residents. In reference to schools, Renaissance 2010 continues to support such containment through the development of "new" schools for the new residents. As argued by organizations like PURE and ACORN, Ren2010 has very little to do with education and everything to do with gentrification gentrification, the rehabilitation and settlement of decaying urban areas by middle- and high-income people. Beginning in the 1970s and 80s, higher-income professionals, drawn by low-cost housing and easier access to downtown business areas, renovated deteriorating  in the name of development. It should also be noted that the educational program was not created by educators, but by the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago The Commercial Club of Chicago is a civic improvement club resulted from the 1907 merger of two predecessor Chicago clubs[1]: the Merchants Club (organized in 1896) and the Commercial Club (organized in 1877). , a business organization structured to draw business and tourist interests to the city. Again, the politics of containment remain in check as white and affluent residents of the city (some who are persons of color not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed.

) only have to see poorer residents during hours of work and remain free from worry in times of leisure. However, a new day may be in store with numerous federal investigations underway targeting the Mayor's office. Crumbling to the pressure, Daley "apologized" to the city for not doing enough to curb corruption. Hopefully the work engaged by communities concerned with racial justice will be able to organize residents to see a new day where apologies like Daley's are no longer needed.
