Adoption

Three of the Chicago area's most active adoption support organizations announced today their plans to co-host a two-day regional conference on adoption. Scheduled for November 4 and November 5, 2000, Conference 2000 will be the first such forum offered jointly by the three non-profit groups: Adoptive Families Today (AFT), Chicago Area Families for Adoption (CAFFA), and Stars of David International's Chicago-area chapter.

Targeted toward both adoptive and pre-adoptive families and individuals, as well as adoption professionals, the conference will feature over 60 workshops from locally and nationally renowned experts in the field of adoption. Topics will include the new Illinois Adoption Registry and Medical Information Exchange, foster parenting, detailed descriptions of the various types of adoption, how to talk to a child about adoption, Jewish adoption issues, legal aspects of adoption, medical and developmental issues, and much more.

The highlight of the two-day event will be a session presented by Jana Wolff, author of "Secret Thoughts of an Adoptive Mother." The conference will be held at Motorola, Inc.'s Galvin Center for Continuing Education continuing education: see adult education.

The decision by AFT, CAFFA and Stars of David to co-host Conference 2000 was in response to a heightened interest in adoption, coupled with a hunger for straightforward information on the topic. Adoption awareness has been raised in Washington D.C. with the establishment of Adoption 2002, an effort which seeks to double the number of foster children placed in homes by 2002, and the recent issuance of a commemorative adoption stamp. Internationally, the Hague Convention The longtime status of Netherlands as a largely neutral nation in international conflicts and the corresponding ascendance of The Hague as a primary location for diplomatic and international conferences has led to several negotiated conventions over the years being termed the  on Intercountry Adoption, a multinational treaty that would establish standards for international adoptions, is in the process of being ratified by more than 50 countries.

"Adoption is slowly gaining recognition within the United States and internationally," said Richard Pearlman, MSW (MicroSoft Word) See Microsoft Word. , executive director of Family Resource Center. "With initiatives in place at the national level to elevate this social issue, events such as Conference 2000 are just what's needed to build stronger ties at the regional level of the adoption community."
