As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 59,259 and the density of 624.30 persons per km². The total area is 94.92 km².

The city was founded on April 1, 1991.

Police said the fire, which broke out at around 3:35 p.m. at the Chiba plant of Sumitomo Chemical Co., was put out at 8:42 p.m.

The 650,000-square-meter factory sits on reclaimed land.
