), world leader in the development of enterprise-wide software solutions, announced today that it is shipping InocuLAN(R) 4.0 for NetWare.

This new upgrade of InocuLAN emphasizes Cheyenne's focus on enterprise-wide network solutions with full NDS See eDirectory.

NDS - Netware Directory Services
support, Windows-based domain management and "hands-free" software updating. InocuLAN 4.0 is the cornerstone of a new generation of security software from Cheyenne which include anti-virus products for NetWare, Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 3.x and DOS.

InocuLAN 4.0 combines powerful network management tools with a new artificial intelligence-based scanning engine which can detect and cure virtually all known (and many unknown) viruses. "Cheyenne is committed to providing world-class anti-virus protection," said ReiJane Huai, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Cheyenne Software. "This commitment is evident in the broad line of new anti-virus products we've developed, and in our monthly updating of those products to ensure up-to-the-minute virus protection."

InocuLAN addresses a key problem in the fight against computer viruses -- getting end-users to actually use anti-virus software. "Nobody wants to run a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) Refers to a program that remains in memory when the user exits it in order that it be immediately available at the press of a hotkey.  (Terminate and Stay Resident See TSR.

Terminate and Stay Resident - (TSR) A type of DOS utility which, once loaded, stays in memory and can be reactivated by pressing a certain combination of keys.
) on their system," Daniel Schrader, InocuLAN's product manager, explained. "We eliminated that issue by replacing the TSR with a VxD (Virtual Device Driver See VxD.

(operating system) Virtual Device Driver - (VxD) A device driver under Windows 3.x/Windows 95 running as part of the kernel and thus having access to the memory of the kernel and all running processes as well as raw access to the hardware.
) in both our Windows 3.x and Windows 95 products. VxDs don't require conventional memory, and are more stable than TSRs."

InocuLAN also offers a unique "enforcement" feature which allows administrators to monitor the utilization of InocuLAN by network users. InocuLAN scans network workstations to ensure the presence of a VxD and warns or logs out offenders. This feature, along with the elimination of the need for TSRs, enables LAN/WAN LAN/WAN Local Area Network/Wide Area Network  managers to implement anti-virus protection measures simply and easily -- a claim no other anti-virus product can make.

InocuLAN's unique "hands free" software updating system helps network administrators ensure that their entire network is protected against the latest viruses. "InocuLAN can automatically dial Cheyenne's BBS (1) (Bulletin Board System) A computer system used as an information source and forum for a particular interest group. They were widely used in the U.S. , download software and virus signature updates and distribute the updates to every server and workstation on the network," said Alex Chen, Cheyenne's director of engineering for network security products. "InocuLAN can even unload itself from the server and then reload to take immediate advantage of the latest updates."

Another significant enhancement in the InocuLAN 4.0 upgrade is the ability to scan compressed files for viruses. This new feature is especially important for users of the Internet as most files downloaded from WWW WWW or W3: see World Wide Web.

(World Wide Web) The common host name for a Web server. The "www-dot" prefix on Web addresses is widely used to provide a recognizable way of identifying a Web site.
and FTP sites are in compressed format. InocuLAN can be directed to scan compressed archives (Zip, ARJ A compression program for backup archiving from ARJ Software, Inc., Norwood, MA (www.arjsoftware.com). Introduced in the early 1990s and created by Robert Jung (the RJ in ARJ), ARJ never achieved the popularity of PKZIP, although it is considered a worthy competitor. See JAR.  and Microsoft Compressed formats) or automatically scan the files in real time as they are accessed.

Other network management capabilities include the most extensive alerting features in the industry. Customized alerts are automatically generated and can be sent by E-mail, page, fax, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. , network broadcast or printed trouble ticket. InocuLAN also provides scanning and detection activity logs, which can be centralized across multiple servers and entire networks.

InocuLAN is tightly integrated with ARCserve(R), Cheyenne's industry-leading storage management solution and is the only anti-virus product that allows real-time virus scanning without degrading ARCserve's performance. InocuLAN can also automatically fax virus alerts using Cheyenne's FAXserve(TM) network fax software.

InocuLAN 4.0 for NetWare is available through Cheyenne's worldwide network of distributors and resellers or directly from Cheyenne. Pricing for InocuLAN varies by volume; for example, a 25-user network license includes the server software, priced at $395, and the client software, priced at $25 per workstation. Free trial versions of InocuLAN, ARCserve and FAXserve are available on CompuServe, on Cheyenne's WWW site and on its latest ServerSuite Live Trial CD.
