Cheyenne has already delivered the basis of its data protection strategy -- ARCserve(R) for Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. Cheyenne will deliver other components of their BackOffice strategy, including an Option for Microsoft SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. "BackOffice provides customers with a solutions platform which inherits the power, security, and ease of administration of Windows NT Server," said Johnathon Roberts, director of product management in the business systems division at Microsoft. "We are pleased that Cheyenne is developing storage solutions which help customers who are deploying client server solutions on Microsoft BackOffice."

Cheyenne's comprehensive support for Microsoft BackOffice began with the debut of ARCserve for Windows NT last year. The company's aggressive development schedule has produced a number of industry `firsts', including the first to: perform backup as a Windows NT system service; deliver full backup See backup types.  of NetWare servers (including Bindery A NetWare file used for security and accounting in the early NetWare 2.x and 3.x versions. ARCserve and InocuLAN both qualified for and carry the "Designed for Microsoft BackOffice(TM)" logo -- making it the first network backup solution and the first anti-virus solution to possess these seals.

"Cheyenne is fully committed to providing world-class, industry-leading software solutions to complement the Microsoft BackOffice environment," said ReiJane Huai, Cheyenne's president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "We are not only delivering on our promise to provide these solutions, but we are delivering them more quickly than any vendor in our market."

Cheyenne is committed to not only delivering solutions to protect BackOffice data, but also to enable large capacity storage solutions for BackOffice applications. Cheyenne's direct access option and CD jukebox products for Windows NT facilitate the migration of data intensive applications to the BackOffice environment. This technology will form the core of Cheyenne's HSM (1) (Hierarchical Storage Management) The automatic movement of files from hard disk to slower, less-expensive storage media. The typical hierarchy is from magnetic disk to optical disc to tape.  and archive solutions for BackOffice.

Protecting the BackOffice

Cheyenne's protection of the BackOffice-based enterprise includes InocuLAN, for protection against virus infection; and ARCserve, for backup and data storage. Both are native, 32-bit applications, designed and developed especially for Windows NT, supporting a variety of platforms, including Intel, MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second. , and Digital Alpha. InocuLAN's real-tine scanning engine safeguards all elements of BackOffice. ARCserve provides backup and data storage for the entire Windows NT enterprise, including heterogeneous clients (NetWare, UNIX UNIX

, Windows(R) 95, Windows NT, OS/2, Macintosh, and Windows 3.1x), database agents for Oracle server, and SAP R/3, and the BackOffice suite.

Micorsoft Windows NT Server: ARCserve backs up Windows NT Servers and Workstations, including local and remote registries, and integrates the capabilities of Windows NT by providing multi-threaded, multi-tasking operations.ARCserve's Multi-Document interface (MDI (1) (Multiple Document Interface) A Windows function that allows an application to display and lets the user work with more than one document at the same time. ) enables the user to tile the windows and manage multiple ARCserve host servers simultaneously. ARCserve's three editions -- Enterprise, Single Server, and Workstation -- can operate independently or can be managed in an enterprise environment through ARCserve Enterprise Edition's centralized manager.

Microsoft SQL Server: Cheyenne Database Agent for Microsoft SQL server is a reliable, flexible connection that allows ARCserve to efficiently back up and restore Microsoft SQL Server databases. ARCserve and the agent combine to provide secure, automated, on-line backup and restore for critical databases, while they are active. If one of the databases on the server needs to be restored, the operation can occur while the other databases on that server continue, uninterrupted.

Microsoft Exchange Server: ARCserve's agent for Microsoft Exchange Server will provide on-line backup for this critical messaging system which must remain open and accessible at all times. Cheyenne will also integrate Microsoft Exchange Server features into ARCserve by distributing ARCseerve information through microsoft Exchange -- for example, Cheyenne Alert sends session logs to user-selected recipients. In addition to safeguarding the Microsoft Exchange Server itself, Cheyenne InocuLAN will also scan document attached to messages, eliminating virus introduction from on-line services and other sources.

Microsoft Systems Management server Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) is a systems management software product by Microsoft for managing large groups of Windows-based computer systems. SMS provides remote control, patch management, software distribution, and hardware and software inventory. : ARCserve backs up Systems Management server and all configuration and security information, while InocuLAN scans the entire server in real-time. Additionally, ARCserve and InocuLAN utilize Systems Management Server for distribution, installation, and license tracking, eliminating manual processes and reducing cost of administration. Furthermore, scheduled backups of on-line Systems Management Server databases can be managed with ARCserve's database agent for SQL Server.

Microsoft SNA Server: Because many companies have substantial investment in the equipment, the data, and the tool of the mainframe, it is essential to integrate that investment into the client/server environment. Through Cheyenne partnership with Boole and Babbage and its Emprise em·prise
