(TM), which will allow users of FAXserve for NetWare(TM) v.3.01 to automatically route faxes directly to the recipient's desktop over enterprise networks and the Internet.

In addition, Cheyenne and Novell announced a joint project to provide fax services for Novell's GroupWise 4.1 and forthcoming GroupWise XTD groupware products in the form of NetWare-Loadable Modules (NLMs) that can be directly loaded onto NetWare servers.

Both announcements were made today at Novell's BrainShare conference in Salt Lake City.

NEST-enabled FAXserve allows incoming transmissions to be sent to users' desktops and viewed within their Windows, DOS and E-mail environments. "The biggest benefit of NEST Autoroute is that it does not require any additional hardware," said David Weingard, director of business development for Cheyenne Software.

"While FAXserve has always had ways of handling facsimile in-bound routing, many of the automatic methods could become expensive to implement. For example, DTMF (Dual-Tone MultiFrequency) The type of audio signals that are generated when you press the buttons on a touch-tone telephone. See also DMTF.

DTMF - Dual Tone Multi Frequency
(digital tone multifunction frequency) and DID (direct inward dial) functionality require specific intelligent modems which are usually more expensive than class two modems. Additionally, DID often requires incremental monthly phone charges from the local phone company," Weingard added. NEST is Novell's technology for connecting intelligent devices such as scanners, fax machines, copiers, home security systems and TV set-top boxes into the Smart Global Network.

"NEST Autoroute provides a framework for addressing and routing documents over the network, allowing Cheyenne to focus its development efforts on ease of use and functionality," said Bryan Ritchie, director of marketing for Novell's Extended Networks Division.

FAXserve for NetWare also features native NetWare Directory Services See eDirectory.

) support, which enables administrators to configure FAXserve on NetWare 4.1 networks, providing simplified installation and management.

Using NDS, FAXserve for NetWare further expands addressing and management capabilities. "Information systems managers will gain single-point administration, managing fax resources just as they do any other network device such as a printer," Ritchie added.

Version 3.01 of FAXserve for NetWare also includes support for SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. , which provides administrators with the ability to monitor FAXserve's activities over distributed network environments, using Hewlett-Packard Co.'s OpenView for Windows or Novell's ManageWise.

Now shipping, FAXserve for NetWare 3.01 is available in user licenses that range from five to 1,000. LAN managers no longer have to purchase a user level of FAXserve equal to or greater than their NetWare user level. For example, a 25-user FAXserve can now be installed on a 100-user level of NetWare. The product also offers additive-user licensing flexibility according to according to

NetWare's policy. If a 100-user network requires 10 more users, administrators can simply buy a 10-user FAXserve, instead of upgrading to the next level of 250 users.

U.S. suggested retail price for FAXserve 3.01 starts at $595; customers who have purchased FAXserve 3.0 are entitled to a free upgrade to version 3.01.

Cheyenne and Novell also announced a technology and business partnership to deliver an NLM-based facsimile product to GroupWise 4.1 and upcoming XTD customers. The new product, FAXserve for GroupWise, will be tightly integrated with the GroupWise messaging system and will allow users to send and receive facsimilies via their GroupWise client.

"NLM-based facsimile services are a natural extension to the GroupWise messaging product. It allows customers to harness the power of 32-bit multi-tasking communications software and also enables both applications to be installed on the same NetWare server, thereby minimizing hardware costs," said Weingard.

Eldon Greenwood, director of product management for Novell's GroupWare division, said: "Novell is looking forward to this partnership with Cheyenne and developing FAXserve for GroupWise users. FAXserve will provide our users with additional functionality and services for viewing, sending, and receiving facsimilies from their Universal Inbox."

FAXserve for GroupWise is expected to ship toward the end of 1996.
