) today announced the release of new AntiVirus Agents that remove viruses from Lotus Notes, Microsoft(R) Exchange Server, and Novell GroupWise applications. Designed to work with Cheyenne's award-winning InocuLAN(R) anti-virus products, the Agents are the first to provide complete virus protection for the e- mail databases, document databases, and discussion sessions that reside in these groupware systems.

Traditional anti-virus products are designed to scan for viruses embedded in individual files. For sophisticated groupware systems such as Microsoft Exchange Server, the file-based method for virus detection falls short of identifying, scanning, and repairing the message attachments stored in the database. Because viruses can spread rapidly through messaging and groupware systems, Cheyenne has taken a revolutionary approach and addressed the problem at the root. Cheyenne's AntiVirus Agents are able to scan the databases created by Notes, Microsoft Exchange Server, and GroupWise

Groupware Anti-Virus Solution

Unfortunately, message and groupware applications can be a dangerous breeding ground for viruses. Rapidly-spreading macro viruses, such as Concept and Laroux, are able to reside in documents within the groupware system and thereby avoid detection by traditional anti- virus software. But the new Cheyenne AntiVirus Agents enable organizations to detect and cure these and other viruses before they can infect users. Cheyenne is the first vendor to bring this level of virus prevention and protection to the marketplace.

"Messaging and groupware applications are clearly changing the way global business is carried out," said Robert Abraham Robert Abraham (born July 13, 1960 in Myrtle Beach, SC) was an American football player who was a linebacker for the Houston Oilers.  of Freeman Associates, Inc. "These programs have enhanced communication and improved productivity -- but they've also left the corporate network at greater risk of infection from viruses. Companies that rely on messaging or groupware for their core business processes require a non-intrusive, bulletproof Refers to extremely stable hardware and/or software that cannot be brought down no matter what unusual conditions arise. Online Protection From Latest Viruses

As organizations deploy groupware and messaging applications in greater numbers, these document databases become frequently-accessed repositories of information; files are opened, shared, and distributed over corporate networks with point-and-click ease. This model for information-sharing demands that users have access to data 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and that information is protected throughout its life cycle.

Cheyenne's AntiVirus Agents meet these requirements by scanning for viruses while the messaging system Software that provides an electronic mail delivery system. It is made up of the following functional components, which may be packaged together or independently.

is open, eliminating the need for server shutdown. The AntiVirus Agents address the issue of data security without impeding user access to mission-critical information.

The AntiVirus Agents work in conjunction with Cheyenne's award- winning network anti-virus solution, InocuLAN, which is certified by the National Computer Security Association (NCSA (1) (National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Urbana-Champaign, IL, www.ncsa.uiuc.edu) A high-performance computing facility located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. ) to detect 100% of viruses in the wild. InocuLAN also utilizes a proprietary Macro Virus Analyzer which can detect all known macro viruses, including the Word/Concept virus and the latest Excel/Laroux virus. Users are particularly susceptible to receiving macro viruses via document attachments in messaging and groupware systems.

Cheyenne's AntiVirus Agents for Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange Server, and Novell GroupWise, will cost $695 each. The Agent for Lotus Notes will be available on the Windows NT and NetWare platforms in August 1996, and on the OS/2 and UNIX UNIX

platforms in November 1996. The Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server will be available on the Windows NT platform in September 1996, and the Agent for Novell GroupWise will be available on the NetWare platform in November 1996. Together, these offerings represent the first and only anti-virus solution which removes viruses from these leading messaging and groupware systems.

"The Cheyenne AntiVirus Agent enables users to protect the investments they've made in messaging and groupware applications," said Peter Harrison, marketing manager for security products at Cheyenne Software. "InocuLAN and the Agents should play a vital role in building users' confidence in the safety of electronic communication."

Cheyenne's Application Agent Strategy

The AntiVirus Agents are an important component of Cheyenne's Application Agent strategy, which the company announced in April of 1996. The Application Agent strategy has enabled Cheyenne to raise the bar on data protection technology by developing solutions for specific applications, including relational databases and messaging/groupware systems. Cheyenne's Application Agents, which include the new AntiVirus Agents announced today and the previously announced Backup Agents, cover the following range of categories:
