"We are committed to the welfare and prosperity of the communities where we live and work," says Rod Spackman, manager of government affairs at the El Segundo El Segundo (ĕl sēgŭn`dō), industrial city (1990 pop. 15,223), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1917. Its products include navigation and computer systems, aircraft parts, office machines, telephone apparatus, and  refinery.

To ensure Chevron's supplier base is reflective of its customers and the markets it serves, Chevron developed the Supplier Diversity/Small Business Program, which helps provide contracts, outreach assistance and other opportunities to small, minority and women-owned businesses.

One success story of the program is Lulu's Dessert Factory, a small minority-owned business. Lulu's is the first company in California to manufacture ready-to-eat gelatin gelatin or animal jelly, foodstuff obtained from connective tissue (found in hoofs, bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage) of vertebrate animals by the action of boiling water or dilute acid.  and is one of Chevron's newest suppliers, providing gelatin desserts to more than 75 company-owned stores in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. "Being a good neighbor is an essential part of our corporate vision." Chevron encourages its employees to volunteer their time -- and company time -- to a number of community service programs.

Annual School Pride Day is one example. Chevron employees join community members to spend an entire day cleaning, painting and sprucing up a local school. In addition, Chevron purchases all of the needed supplies.

Chevron employees also help preserve Yosemite National Park Yosemite National Park (yōsĕm`ĭtē), 761,266 acres (308,205 hectares), E central Calif.; est. 1890 as a result of the efforts of conservationist John Muir.
