Chevron Delo Adds Major Support to Share the Road Safety Program; Top Trucking Industry Lubricant Brand Joins Mack Trucks, Inc. as Major Sponsor.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- The American Trucking Associations today announced that Chevron Delo(R), a leading brand of lubricants and coolants to the trucking industry, has joined Mack Trucks, Inc. as a major sponsor of the ATA Share the Road highway safety program.

Since 2000, with Mack as its sole sponsor, Share the Road has been delivering the trucking industry's safety message to major traffic-choked cities and media markets across the U.S. At each event, million-mile, accident-free professional truck drivers simulate real life highway situations to illustrate their car-truck safety lessons. The visits include highway ride-alongs for local news media to provide them with an "up close and personal" look at local driving habits from a truck driver's unique point of view.

For many local television viewers and newspaper readers, the demonstrations are their first exposure to critical safety information about tractor-trailer blind spots, turning space requirements, and lengthy stopping distances. The information can be lifesaving as both the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the "FAA" for the trucking industry, and the American Automobile Association (AAA) Foundation for Traffic Safety report that up to 75 percent of all fatal car-truck crashes begin with an error on the part of the car driver. Further, according to the FMCSA, 35 percent of fatal car-truck crashes occur in a truck's blind spots.

With increased funding, ATA will now expand its Share the Road safety message into two additional and important driver categories: high school driver education classes and senior citizen groups. A radio and television public service announcement campaign is also under consideration.

ATA safety officials cite the Share the Road program as one of several factors contributing to the trucking industry's current positive highway safety trend. For the past two years, the number of truck-involved fatalities has dropped below 5,000, with trucking as the only highway user group to record a drop in fatalities.
