Chestnut restoration. We would like to compliment Karen Charman for her in-depth research on the article "The Shape of Forests To Come" [May/June], but we disagree with the generally negative slant of the article and would like to correct a few mistakes. We believe that environmental problems caused by the human race should, where possible, be corrected, and that is why the restoration of the American chestnut has interested us for over 25 years. We live in an exciting age where the new tools of biotechnology are being used to cure human diseases, increase our food supply in environmentally friendly ways, and to remove pollutants from contaminated contaminated, v 1. made radioactive by the addition of small quantities of radioactive material. 2. made contaminated by adding infective or radiographic materials. 3. an infective surface or object. water and soils. As the research moves from the lab into field trials, we will add on ecologists, wildlife scientists, food technologists, and even sociologists. The initial field trials will be intensively studied over a three- to five-year period in multiple locations to see how the trees respond to differences in climate and soils. The trees will be easy to contain by manually controlling flowering during these studies because the American chestnut does not reproduce "by sending up suckers from their roots or by re-growing from broken twigs," as incorrectly reported in the article. After successful field trials, we will seek either a "release," or a "conditional release" which under the new USDA USDA, n.pr See United States Department of Agriculture. APHIS rules would allow the trees to be planted more widely while data would continue to be collected in test plots. The type of release will depend on the results from the field trials.
