This book explains three of nature's most violent phenomena: earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis, using a combination of science, history and folklore folklore, the body of customs, legends, beliefs, and superstitions passed on by oral tradition. It includes folk dances, folk songs, folk medicine (the use of magical charms and herbs), and folktales (myths, rhymes, and proverbs).  and mythology mythology [Greek,=the telling of stories], the entire body of myths in a given tradition, and the study of myths. Students of anthropology, folklore, and religion study myths in different ways, distinguishing them from various other forms of popular, often orally . Chester, a world-renowned expert, explains all three phenomena using plate tectonic theory Noun 1. plate tectonic theory - the branch of geology studying the folding and faulting of the earth's crust
plate tectonics, tectonics

geomorphology, morphology - the branch of geology that studies the characteristics and configuration and evolution of
, and he also relates how scientists developed this theory over time. Just as interestingly, he describes earlier theories behind these disastrous events based on religious beliefs and folklore, and he describes past and recent occurrences of three types of destructive forces. Weideman's dramatic voice is perfectly suited to the drama of the events he describes, but it also makes some of the dry geological explanations of continental drift continental drift, geological theory that the relative positions of the continents on the earth's surface have changed considerably through geologic time. Though first proposed by American geologist Frank Bursley Taylor in a lecture in 1908, the first detailed theory  and platetectonic theory interesting as well. This audio is an adaptation of the original book and some of the science might have been easier to understand with some charts or illustrations, although the narration goes a long way to making it accessible to the listener. As we seem to be living through a time of extreme weather and geological and climatic events, such as the tsunami of 2004 and the recent earthquakes in China, understanding the earth science behind some of them will interest many students.
