Cherokee International (NASDAQ:CHRK), a leading manufacturer of power supplies, today announced its next-generation Polaris 2 half-brick DC/DC converter family boasting over 20 percent more power versus competitive half-bricks. Delivering 120 amps (A) for the 1.2-volt (V), 1.5V, 1.8V versions, the Polaris 2 product family is able to achieve the performance of previous generation full bricks in a fraction of the size. The converter family also supports 2.5V at 100A, 3.3V at 80A, and 5V at 55A. The Polaris 2 is an isolated, fixed-frequency, state-of-the-art design that uses synchronous rectification to achieve very high efficiencies up to 92 percent and operates without de-rating at practical operating conditions of 300 linear feet per minute (LFM) airflow at 50 degrees Celsius (C). Measuring 2.42 by 2.4 by .45 inches, the Polaris 2 has an ultra fast loop response to minimize peak deviations -- achieving a fast recovery time for powering next generation chipsets.

OEMs will find the Polaris 2 to have optimal thermal performance and leading output efficiencies to meet current-hungry requirements for leading-edge telecom, router/switch, networking, wireless local loop, RF transmission and ATE test equipment. These single output converters have a high current density of 46A per cubic inch -- occupying less real estate at the system level -- and can handle input voltages from 36V to 75V, with 48V as the nominal voltage.

The Polaris 2 family meets an input voltage transient requirement of 100V for 100 milliseconds as well as insulation requirements for EN60950. The optional base-plate model enhances thermal performance in the harshest environments. Additional features include remote on/off, no external bias requirements, no minimum load requirements, and constant frequency operation that provide predictable EMI performance. The Polaris 2 converters support the "Double P" pinout standard, having two output pins to handle high current. Performance is further enhanced with tightly regulated outputs, low ripple and noise, auto restart after fault shutdown, over-temperature protection, output over-current and over-voltage protection, and input under-voltage protection.

The 120A Polaris 2 half brick family is available in open-frame or base-plate models with 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.5, 3.3 and 5 output voltages and is priced at $99 for quantities of 1,000 units. Samples are available now through Cherokee International.
