Ciba Specialty Chemicals is a chemical company based in and near Basel, Switzerland. It was formed as the non-pharmaceuticals elements of Novartis were spun out in 1997, following the merger in the
 launched its first joint venture--called Ciba Especialides Quimicas Conosur--in Chile with two other partners. The joint venture will sell chemicals used in mineral and paper processing, water treatment and pollution control in Chile, Argentina Argentina (ärjəntē`nə, Span. ärhāntē`nä), officially Argentine Republic, republic (2005 est. pop. 39,538,000), 1,072,157 sq mi (2,776,889 sq km), S South America. , Peru, Bolivia Bolivia (bōlĭv`ēə, Span. bōlē`vyä), officially Republic of Bolivia, republic (2005 est. pop. 8,858,000), 424,162 sq mi (1,098,581 sq km), W South America. , Uruguay and Paraguay.
