Skogestad (chemical engineering, Norwegian U. of Science and Technology) emphasizes basic mass and energy balance principles in this text for process engineers in training. He builds from the basic principles that mass is conserved, energy is conserved, and any system will proceed toward a more probable state with more disorder, and, left to itself, will end up in a state of equilibrium. He begins by describing the derivation of balance equations, followed by mass balances with reaction, the energy balance, heat exchange, compression and expansion, entropy and equilibrium, work from heat, mechanical energy balances, chemical reaction engineering, and process dynamics. Appendices cover material on thermodynamics and physical chemistry, the relationship between entropy and equilibrium, and differential balances along with additional problems including a test exam. Skogestad also provides answers to exercises.
