) Wednesday announced that the company's board of directors has appointed Edward F. Covell, a senior executive with nearly 30 years experience in the consumer products and medical device industries, to the newly created position of president and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Covell's experience includes executive positions with Tambrands Inc. and with The Kendall Co. ChemTrak markets a home test for cholesterol in the United States and overseas, under the brand name CholesTrak(tm). The company is also awaiting U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for its home collection test system for HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States. . Other ChemTrak products now in development include tests for the asthma drug theophylline theophylline /the·oph·yl·line/ (the-of´i-lin) a xanthine derivative found in tea leaves and prepared synthetically; its salts and derivatives act as smooth muscle relaxants, central nervous system and cardiac muscle stimulants, and  and H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori, which is associated with peptic ulcers).

Covell served as president and chief operating officer of Medchem Products Inc. of Woburn, Mass. Medchem is a manufacturer of medical devices serving customers in 14 countries.

From 1980 through 1990, Covell held a series of increasingly responsible positions, ending as corporate vice president and general manager of the Diagnostics Division, with Tambrands of Lake Success, N.Y. Tambrands is a $600 million per year consumer health-care products company.

From 1968 through 1980, he served in management and product development positions with The Kendall Co., a diversified manufacturing company with world sales in 1980 of $500 million. His assignments included work as a division general manager in France and the United Kingdom.
