Checkpoint Systems Announces New Contracts in Europe.

Checkpoint Systems, Inc., (NYSE: CKP), a leading provider of integrated security to retailers worldwide, announced today that it has been selected to install radio frequency electronic article surveillance (RF/EAS) anti-theft systems, including source tagging, by several major European retail store chains.

Checkpoint's contracts with these four companies marks another step in the Company's plans to further accelerate its global expansion plans, and further establishes its radio frequency technology as the standard for retail security worldwide.

Norway - Varner Gruppen, one of Norway's largest retail fashion chain, with 450 stores in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Poland and the Baltic region, has selected Checkpoint for the chain-wide installation of RF/EAS systems. Varner selected Checkpoint after conducting a series of tests that included RF and competing technologies. Checkpoint's systems will be fully installed in Varner's stores by the end of 2000.

Austria - Palmers Textil AG, an international retailer of high quality lingerie, has chosen to install Checkpoint's new digital radio frequency technology chain-wide. Palmers, based in Vienna, operates 165 stores in Austria and Germany and distributes their merchandise to another 170 franchise stores. Palmers made the decision to implement Checkpoint's RF technology after evaluation against other technologies. The installation of Checkpoint's radio frequency system is slated for completion by June 2000.

England - Wickes, a leading chain of D-I-Y outlets and builders' merchant stores, named Checkpoint Systems as the exclusive provider of loss prevention technology for its 125 stores. Wickes selected Checkpoint's QS55 and QS45 antennas, which will be located at each store's entrance and exit. Wickes chose Checkpoint's technology for its RF source tagging capabilities which they believe is the source tagging solution for the future, as well as for the Company's non-contact scan deactivation. Checkpoint's RF source tagging program saves stores time while providing extra protection from theft since in-store tagging becomes unnecessary and neither employees nor customers know where the paper-thin tags are hidden.

Spain - Ahold (Spain), part of the Ahold Group, and one of the fastest-growing supermarket chains, retained Checkpoint as its EAS systems provider. Ahold, with 180 stores, is working with Checkpoint to convert the chain's existing EAS technology to Checkpoint's Digital RF technology, believing this platform to be the best system to support their growing source tagging program. With the move to Digital RF technology, Ahold (Spain) is joining the ranks of some of Europe's leading retailers, including El Corte Ingles, Continente and Champion, who are migrating to more comprehensive source tagging programs.
