Struggling Internet Internet

Publicly accessible computer network connecting many smaller networks from around the world. It grew out of a U.S. Defense Department program called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), established in 1969 with connections between computers at the
 retailer Checkout.com said its assets will be acquired by Atlanta-based rival Amplified Inc.

The deal essentially ends the new-media marriage between former Hollywood superagent Michael Ovitz Michael S. Ovitz (b. December 14 1946, Los Angeles, California) is a former talent agent and Hollywood powerhouse who served as the head of the Creative Artists Agency from 1975 to 1995.  and supermarket tycoon Ron Burkle.

Privately held Amplified Inc., which supplies hundreds of thousands of digital music tracks to Internet retailers and other customers' Web sites, will pay an undisclosed amount of stock for the bulk of Checkout's assets.

Checkout's 50 employees are expected to keep their jobs, boosting Amplified's workforce to 140.
