Division of Taxation is making tax time easier, thanks to a new service available at the state's official Web site (www.RI.gov). Citizens can now view the status of their pending tax return via a secure Internet site, accelerating the process for personal income tax filers and reducing call volumes at the Division of Taxation's offices.

"The goal of this service is twofold," said R. Gary Clark Gary C.  check, and it helps free up a significant amount of time with our taxpayer assistance staff that they historically spend on the phone with individuals answering their inquires about the status of their return."

Citizens can take advantage of this new service by visiting www.RI.gov. The user-friendly service only requires a few pieces of information to retrieve a status report, including the taxpayer's name, social security number, and the expected amount of the return.

"We ask for this information to protect the privacy of every taxpayer," said Joan Gammon, general manager of RI.gov. "Very specific pieces of data are required to access a pending return status report, and we encourage taxpayers to have to have a copy of their returns available when they go online to use the service."

The service is updated on a regular basis and lets users know if their returns have been processed, mailed, or are being further evaluated because of processing problems.

Rhode Island processes approximately 550,000 personal income tax returns every year.

"We're very pleased to be adding the tax refund status tool to our growing suite of eGovernment services," said Tom Collins, Rhode Island Chief Information Officer. "It is another very useful example of how Rhode Island is continuing to use technology to increase service to our citizens while decreasing the expenses of offering such services."

The tax return status report is one of many online services created without taxpayer expense as part of a zero-dollar partnership between the state of Rhode Island and New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
