Due to the increasing convergence between wireless and IP networks, IT administrators face an exponential onslaught of attacks that to-date have been confined to the world of wire line data. Many of these issues were highlighted in the Second European Cellular Security Forum which took place in Rome last year, key security threats identified were handset authentication and verification; vulnerability to IP threats currently associated with the Internet and network threats such as over-billing and mobile-to-mobile attacks. Operators also reported the presence of worms within their cellular networks and the increase of threats to PDA style phones. The Forum endorsed the need for an integral Cellular and IP security infrastructure to meet the threats of 2004.
