A BENEFIT cheat has been caught claiming money he was not entitled to.

After investigation he pleaded guilty to failing to notify North Tyneside Council.

At North Shields Magistrates' Court he was sentenced to a 12-month community punishment order, which means that he must carry out 100 hours of unpaid work. The council also received a compensation order in respect of the overpayment.

Coun Ray Glindon, cabinet member for revenue and benefits, said: "Benefit fraud is not a vic-timless crime as any losses through must be recovered from funds."
