The Tories argue drivers should be sacked and cars scrapped to save money.

We don't disagree that efficiency is a priority when public finances are under severe strain.

But the Conservatives have left themselves open to the charge of hypocrisy when their own leader enjoys a car and chauffeur funded by taxpayers.

In fact David Cameron was famously caught asking the vehicle to follow with his shoes while he cycled for the cameras.

Gordon Brown has never been so wasteful.
